How to use Claude for sales prospecting: playbook + prompts.

Claude is the highest-leverage tool in a sales prospector's stack in 2026 — if you use it right. Used wrong, it produces generic outreach that damages your domain reputation. This is the playbook for using it right.

The short version

Use Claude for: account research before outreach, personalized opener generation (not full emails — personalized openers grafted onto templates), sequence drafting, response handling. Don't use Claude to send autonomously. Best stack: Claude Pro + Apollo or Clay for data + Outreach or Salesloft for delivery. Result: 3-5× the personalized outreach volume at higher response rates.

Step 1: Build your ICP Project in Claude

Create a Claude Project with: your ICP definition, common pain points by persona, your competitive positioning, recent customer wins, value propositions by industry. Foundation for everything else.

Step 2: Account research workflow

Before any outbound to a target account, run this prompt: 'Research [Company]. What did they announce recently? Who's on their leadership team in [target function]? What competitors do they likely consider? What pain points fit our ICP? Output: 1-page brief for an AE.' 30 seconds to generate; saves 30 minutes of manual research.

Step 3: Personalized opener generation

Don't ask Claude to write entire emails. Ask for personalized openers: 'Generate 5 different opening lines for outreach to [Person] at [Company] based on [Context]. Make each one specific to their situation. Skip generic compliments.' Use the best opener; combine with your tested email template body.

Step 4: Sequence drafting

'Draft a 5-email sequence for [Persona] at [Stage] companies. Email 1: short, value-focused. Email 2: case study reference. Email 3: alternative angle. Email 4: short check-in. Email 5: break-up. Maintain consistent voice across the sequence.' AE customizes the output, ships.

Step 5: Response handling

When prospects reply, paste the reply into Claude with: 'Draft 2-3 response options. The prospect said X. We want to move toward Y. Keep it short and human.' Eliminates the 'what do I say back?' bottleneck.

What NOT to do

Three common mistakes:

1. Auto-sending. Always have human review. Reputation damage from bad AI outreach takes months to recover.
2. Generic personalization. 'I see you went to [University]' is worse than no personalization. Skip if you can't be specific.
3. Treating Claude as a writer, not a thinking partner. Best use is collaborative iteration, not 'write me an email.'
